Kolkata: “Agency vs. Cops”- The dispute surrounding the attacks on Enforcement Directorate (ED) teams in West Bengal intensified on Monday when the agency claimed that the state police had only filed a First Information Report (FIR) for non-scheduled and bailable offenses related to the Sandeshkhali incident, and had not sent a copy of the complaint to the agency.
It said that on January 5, despite local police being notified of the ED operation, a “similar incident” occurred once more involving its team when the mob assaulted its personnel during the arrest of TMC leader Shankar Adhya in Simultala Bongaon, North 24 Paraganas district. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) stated in a statement that a FIR has also filed in relation to this occurrence, but a copy is still pending.

The Enforcement Department also asserted that this “scam” was of “enormous” proportions and that a suspect had transferred profits of crime totaling between ₹ 9,000 and 10,000 crore, of which ₹ 2,000 crore “suspected to be transferred to Dubai either directly or through Bangladesh.”

The ED charged the local police of weakening the charges brought against the accused in relation to the attack that severely injured three agency personnel in a press release on Monday. In addition to failing to apprehend the fugitive Trinamul leader, the police have also so far not made any inroads into the widespread attacks on ED, CRPF, and media personnel, as well as the theft and vandalism of their belongings. In response to an attack on ED teams during a search at the home and office of Sahajahan Sheikh, the convenor of TMC Sandesh Khali, North 24 Parganas, on January 5, 24, the jurisdictional Police received a complaint, which led to the registration of a First Information Report (FIR) for offenses under Sections 307, 333, 326, 353, 392, 395, 397, 149, 148, 186, 189, 426, 435, 440, 341 & 342 r/w Section 120B, 109, and 115 of the Indian Penal Code, 1860.
